1851 – British Indian Association was established in Bengal with Radha Kanta Dev as president and Devendranath Tagore as the Secretary.

1945 – The first ball point pen in the U.S. went on sale.

1947 – A forest fire at Concord was drenched with rain produced by seeding cumulus clouds with dry ice, the first such event in the U.S. The rain-making planes were flown over the burning area by seeders. However, natural rainfall followed, caused by natural conditions, so it was not possible to measure the artificial rainfall.

1960 – Muhammad Ali’s 1st professional boxing fight; beats Tunney Hunsaker in 6 bouts.

1971 – The first successful use of electricity to repair a bone fracture is reported by surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania.

1988 – China announces a herbal male contraceptive.

1999 – Deadliest Indian Ocean tropical cyclone hits Orissa. This event was known as 1999 Orissa cyclone ever since. It killed as many as 10,000. Also called the Cyclone 05B and Paradip Cyclone, it was the deadliest storm to hit India after 1971.

2004 – Arabic news network, Al Jazeera broadcasts an excerpt from a video of Osama bin Laden in which the terrorist leader first admits direct responsibility for the September 11, 2001 attacks.

2005 – Islamic terrorists set off three bombs in Delhi, killing 62 people and injuring hundred.

2015 – China announces the end of its one-child policy after 35 years.

2019 – Rising seas could endanger 150 million people worldwide, three times more than previously thought, according study by Climate Central published in “Nature Communications”.

1981 – Reema Sen, Kolkara born  model, actor. She acted in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films. She won 2 Filmfare awards and 3 nominations, in addition to South India’s prominent Ananda Viketan Cinema award.

1985 – Vijender Singh, first  Indian boxer,  who won Bronze medal in Beijing Olympics in 2008 apart from Asian and National awards. He was also awarded Arjuna and Padam Shri honors. He joined Congress Party in 2019 and faught Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi and lost to BJPs Ramesh Bidhuri. Joined BJP in 2024 (pic credit -Facebook).

1990 – Vinod Mehra, a charming  Bollywood actor, statrted his career as child artist 1950s, later acted as hero in Ek Hi Raasta in 1971 and Sarfira, Prem Pratigya, Pather ke Phool, Ghar, Swarg Narak, Saajan Bina Suhagan,  Anuraag etc. He won 4 nominations to Filmfare award (pic credit-IMDb).

Something sweet: Most Indian  communities believe that an infant’s first taste should be something sweet “so that the baby speaks sweetly.” In Islam, this is done by rubbing either a softened date or a bit of honey into the baby’s upper palate.
