1775 – U.S. Navy forms.

1873 – Farmer Joseph F. Glidden applied for a patent on barbed wire. Before this innovation, settlers on the treeless plains had no easy way to fence livestock away from cropland, and ranchers had no way to prevent their herds from roaming far and wide. Glidden’s barbed wire opened the plains to large-scale farming, and closed the open range, bringing the era of the cowboy and the round-up to an end.

1904 – The first underground and underwater rail system in the U.S., the New York City Subway, began operating (pic credit-Wikipedia).

1947 – Indian Governments accepts King of Jammu and Kashmir Maharaja Harisingh’s accession merging Jammu and Kashmir in India and sends its troops. No. 12 Sqn was to initiate the remarkable feat of air-lifting the first Sikhs from Palam onto the rough and dusty Srinagar airstrip without planning or reconnaissance as the initial Indian response to the sizeable insurgent forces that were pouring across the border into Jammu and Kashmir. Infantry – the queen of the battle, celebrates 27 October each year as the Infantry Day, which has a historical significance for our Nation.

2010 – A free trade accord between India and Malaysia is announced.

2022 – Elon Musk takes ownership and control of Twitter, immediately fires 4 executives.

1811 – Isaac Merrit Singer, American inventor of a practical sewing machine.

1907 – Sardar Bhagat Singh, the great martyr, was born in village Banga, Lyallpur (now in Pakistsan) in a reputed Sikh freedom fighter’s family.

1920 – KR Narayanan, scholar, diplomat, minister, ambassador and 10th President from 1997-2002.

1923 – Arvind Navinchandra Mafatlal, famous Textile fibre and Readymade Garments leader took Gujaratstate to the top of Textile industry in India. He was awarded many Industry honors and Lions Club of America  award for humanitarian work.

1954 – Anuradha Paudwal, (real name Alka Nadkarni). Bollywood song and Bhajan singer. She faced tough competition from Mageshkar sisters but got support from Gulshan Kumar, a music lover who started T-Series cheaper music albums to make music available to common man. Auradha has sung  over 9000 songs and 1500 Bhajans, in 13 languages, starting with a Sanskrit shloka for  film Abhimaan in 1973. She has won  a National Film,  4 Filmfare and Padam Shri award (video credit-T-Series and Times Entertainment).

1984 – Irfan Pathan. Indian cricket all rounder has played 29 Test  matches, taken 100 wickets, 120 ODIs with 173 wkts. Also playes for Gujarat Titans in IPL format.

RIP….

1969 – Darshansingh Pheruman, a Freedom Fighter, later turned Sikh Homeland activist.   Died in Amritsar on 74th day of his fast,  for the merger of Chandigarh in Punjab (pic from-Facebook).

1987 – Vijay Merchant, popular Indian allrounder. Was named a Wisdon Cricketer of the Year in 1937. He’s also the oldest batsman to score a century (154) at an age of 40 years 21 days in 1952-53 series . Later became an administrator in BCCI. Vijay Merchant Trophy was launched in his name  for under-16 young players.

2001 – Pradeep Kumar, veteran Bengali and Bollywood actor  of  Golden and  melodious era.  He acted in  Anarkali, Naagin, Aarti, Taj Mahal, Bheegi Raat, Adalat, Ghunghat, Sanjog,  Bahu Begam, Shirin Ferhad, Duniya, Swami Vivekanand etc. He was  awarded Filmfare and many other film honors. Also  awarded  Kalakar Lifetime  Achievement  award  in 1999.

You may have known….Family shrine: In Shinto tradition, parents and  grandparents take the baby to visit their family shrine, a local place of worship, within 30 to 100 days after birth as a way of welcoming them as a new adherent. The ceremony is called a ‘miyamairi’ and is viewed as an opportunity to present the baby to the deities and ask for their protection on behalf of the child.         In Hindu religion soon after the child is born,  the baby is taken to  Kul Devta and Kul Devi temple and puja is done .  (pic credit-iStock).
