1492 – Lead pencils 1st used.
1858 – A U.S. patent was issued for cycling reheated water in a washing machine. The invention was an improvement for washing machines in which a reciprocating plunger acts on clothes in a tub.
1916 – Margaret Sanger arrested for obscenity (advocating birth control).
1947 – In a letter sent to Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu & Kashmir, the then Governor-General of India, Lord Mountbatten accepted the accession with a remark, “it is my Government’s wish that as soon as law and order have been restored in Jammu and Kashmir and her soil cleared of the invaders the question of the State’s accession should be settled by a reference to the people.” The accession of Jammu and Kashmir to India would become one of the most significant events in the politics and history of the subcontinent).
1950 – Mother Teresa established her Mission of Charity in Calcutta.
1962 – After Chinese attack, Emergency and Defence of India Ordinance was declared for the first time in India by the President.
1984 – Baby Fae became the first new-born recipient of a cross-species heart transplant; a walnut-sized young baboon heart. She had been born prematurely 12 days earlier with hypoplastic left-heart syndrome, a lethal underdevelopment of the left side of the heart. Bailey suggested the experimental xenotransplant to the mother. By 1977, three such animal-heart transplants into adults had provided less than four days of life at best. Bailey believed the infant’s underdeveloped immune system would be less likely to reject alien tissue, and a new drug cyclosporine would help. 1886 – Godabarish Mishra, famous Orria poet, playwright and patriot, called father of modern Oriya literature. He wrote many books, prominent was ‘अर्द्धशताब्दीर ओड़िशा ओ तहिंरे मो स्थान’. (Half a Century of Odissa and Place There). He was awarded Sahitya Akedmy Award in 1961 for this epic.
1947 – Hillary Clinton. Wife of former US president Bill Clinton and was later appouinted as Secretary of State by President Barack Obama. She faught Presidential election against Donald Trump in 2016 but lost. She has written several books on politics, social and family affairs (pic credit-BBC).
1956 – Rita Wlson. Americal actor/singer. Known for popular films and awards to her credit.
1974 – Raveena Tandon, popular Bollywood actor. Daughter of noted film director/producer Ravi Tandon. She acted in over 60 films including Mohra, Barood, Daman, Aks, Dulhje Raja, Ziddi, Vinashak, Dilwali, Khiladiyon ke Khiladi, Bombay Velvet, Hanuman Da, Shaab, One Friday Night, Ghudchadhi etc. She has won several awards; like National, Filmfare, and Padam Shri.

1972 – Igor I. Sikorsky, was a Russian-born U.S. pioneer in aircraft design who is best known for his successful development of the helicopter. He was honored with several Russian and US space awards. (pic credit-Britannica).
1990 – V. Shantaram, veteran film scriptwriter, producer, director, Padam Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee.
