Aryna Sabalenka Reclaims WTA No. 1 Ranking, Overtaking Iga Swiatek

Washington: US Open champion Aryna Sabalenka has officially regained the No. 1 spot in the WTA rankings, ending Iga Swiatek’s impressive 11-month reign. In the latest rankings published on Monday, Sabalenka led Swiatek by 41 points, overturning a 69-point deficit from the previous week, despite neither player competing last week.
According to the WTA, Sabalenka’s return to the top was facilitated by “continuing year-end adjustments for falling short of certain tournament quotas.” The Belarusian had previously held the No. 1 ranking from September to November last year and solidified her position by winning the Wuhan Open on October 13.
Swiatek has taken a break to facilitate a coaching change since her last appearance at the U.S. Open, where she reached the quarterfinals before being defeated by Jessica Pegula, who later lost to Sabalenka in the final. Additionally, Sabalenka defended her Australian Open title in January.
Swiatek’s next opportunity to reclaim the top spot will be at the WTA Finals next month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
