In Bhopal 4 percent women experience early Menopause Symptoms by age 35: Dr. Purohit

Our specialist contributer on Community Health issues *Dr. Naresh Purohit underlines the young women’s predicament on World Menopausal Day (Oct. 18) citing latest study in Madhya Pradesh

New Delhi/Bhopal : According to a recent study conducted under the patronage of Indian Menopausal Society from 2019 to 2023, titled ‘State of Menopausal Health in Bhopal” ,
four percent of women experience early menopause symptoms between the age of 29-34, and approximately eight percent in the 35-39 age group owing to a difference in the lifestyle.
The study was conducted on  4,000 women participants from the state capital Bhopal City between the ages of 29 and 40.
However, menopause normally occurs between 49 and 52 years of age said Dr. Naresh Purohit, Principal Investigator of the Study and
Executive Member , Federation of Reproductive Health Service – India (FRHS).

Voicing his concern over this issue on the occasion of World Menopause Day (October 18),  noted Epidemiologist Dr Purohit informed that a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors are responsible for early menopause, which can have significant health implications, including an increased risk of osteoporosis and heart disease.

“During menopause, the estrogen levels in women drops thereby limiting the efficiency of the osteoblasts. As a result, the bones become weaker than  in men. Less estrogen reduces calcium absorption thus decreasing bone density causing reduction of overall bone mass. These pre-disposes women to a higher risk of orthopaedic ailments like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis (OA),” he averred.
