1946 – First electric blanket manufactured.

1946 – Jinnah’s 9-point demands conveyed to Congress.

1947 – First telephone conversation between a moving car & a plane.

1949 – The Territorial Army of India inaugurated by the Governor General. A second line of defence, it is only meant for those people who are already in mainstay civilian professions. In fact, gainful employment or self-employment in a civil profession is a pre-requisite for joining the Territorial Army. The TA initially had various types of units but after 1972, only infantry battalions.

1976 – International Dialing Telephone Service started between Mumbai and London.

2012 – Women’s rights and education activist Malala Yousafzai is shot three times by a Taliban gunman as she tried to board her school bus in Swat district of northwest Pakistan.

1534 – Guru Ram Das. 4th Sikh Guru, (from 9th Sept. 1574 to  1st Sept. 1581),  credited with establishing city of Ram Sar, now known as Amritsar. He also built Harmandir Sahib,  Golden Temple, the holiest seat of Sikh Panth.

1933 – Sir Peter Mansfield. (English physicist whose work led to the development of MRI. He was the first live subject to undergo MRI test. Awarded Nobel Prize in 2003).

1945 – Amjad Ali Khan, musician. Ace Sarod player and classical musician of Gwalior Gharana. Conducted many music shows globally. He was honored with Sangeet Natak Akademy and Padam Bhushan awards.

2006 – Raymond Noorda. (American electrical mechanical engineer, known as father of computer networking.

2006 – Kanshi Ram, politician. Known for fighting for the Dalits (lowrr and weaker sections), founded Bahujan Samaj Party. Was elected to Lok Sabha twice from Ropar/Hoshiarpur and Rajya Sabha from 1998-2004.

Kashmiri Wedding: Kashmiri weddings are very similar to Hindu weddings. In Kashmiri  weddings, a ceremony called ‘Diugun’ is performed which is similar to the ‘Haldihanth Rasam’. When the groom and his family arrives, both the fathers of the couple exchange nutmeg as a symbol of their friendship.
