Chandigarh:  “Let us rededicate ourselves to Mother India and join hands for the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.”  told the chief guest  Vinod Paul,  Member, NITI Aayog to Young Graduates   At the 38th Convocation of PGIMER today, 107 exceptional students were honored with medals for their academic brilliance, while 1,547 graduates received their degrees, marking their successful completion of various medical disciplines. This grand event underscored PGIMER’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and added another significant chapter to its illustrious legacy.
The ceremony was graced by Padma Shree Prof. Jagat Ram, Former Director, PGIMER, as the Guest of Honour. Prof. Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER; Prof. R.K. Ratho, Dean (Academics); and Prof. Ashutosh N. Aggarwal, Prof. In-charge (Academic Section) shared the dais with these revered dignitaries.
Delivering his Convocation address Prof. Paul urged the young graduates to keep “Nation first and Self last.” He quoted from the Prime Minister’s speech at PGIMER’s Convocation in 2014: “Whatever we achieve, we do so not solely by our own efforts, but because of the society that supports us. It is our responsibility to repay this debt by giving back and uplifting the community that made our success possible.”
Emphasizing the same message, Prof. Paul further highlighted, “Today, we celebrate the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. This convocation is not just a milestone; it is the first step toward a new journey of professional excellence. As you move forward, remember that your knowledge and skills are not just for yourself, but for the service of humanity. Hold fast to the values instilled in you by this great institution.”
Reflecting on his college days in Chandigarh, Prof. Paul shared, “PGI holds a special place in my heart. As a student at DAV College, I would walk from my hostel in Sector 15 to the college in Sector 10, passing by PGI and witnessing doctors coming in and out of this esteemed institution. I often wondered if I would ever have the privilege of being associated with such a prestigious place.”
The Member, NITI Aayog, lauded PGIMER for its enduring dedication to patient care, medical education and innovative research, as he guided the young graduates “This institution is not just a place of learning; it is a beacon of aspiration and unity. The legacy you carry forward is a testament to the strength of the human spirit. You are now part of a tradition that stands tall in its commitment to excellence and service. Honor this legacy by embracing the responsibility that comes with your new role in the world.”
He cautioned, “Technology has the power to revolutionize medicine, but it must be guided by compassion and equity. As doctors, you must remain vigilant to ensure that AI and other tools serve all patients fairly, without perpetuating existing biases and without compromising clinical examination.”
In a deeply emotional tone, Prof. Paul urged the young graduates never to forget the sacrifices made by their parents: “I charge you with the responsibility of looking after your parents.”
In a heartfelt conclusion, Prof. Paul stated, “As graduates, you now stand at the threshold of great responsibility. The knowledge you have gained here is not just a tool for success, but a guiding light in your professional journey. Uphold the wisdom, integrity, and compassion that have been instilled in you. You have the power to shape the future, and the world will look to you for leadership and inspiration.”
Addressing the gathering as the Guest of Honour, Padma Shree Prof. Jagat Ram reflected on PGIMER’s journey: “As we celebrate this convocation, let us also reflect on the trust the world places in PGI. The institution stands as a symbol of excellence, a victim of its own success, with overwhelming patient trust leading to record outpatient and emergency numbers.”
Quoting Nelson Mandela, Prof. Jagat Ram cautioned the young graduates about future challenges, “Today is your new beginning. Keep in mind, as Nelson Mandela said, ‘After climbing a great hill, one finds there are many more to climb.’ But you are fortunate, as you carry forward the legacy of PGI, a beacon of healing and hope.”
Earlier in the ceremony, Prof. Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER, highlighted the institute’s achievements and trajectory of excellence: “PGI isn’t just a medical institute; it’s Nalanda and Takshashila of the modern era. These were the greatest universities the world has ever seen, and PGI stands tall among the greatest medical institutions globally. More than 25% of program directors in the U.S. come from PGI—this is the power of our alma mater.”
Prof. Lal further praised the commitment of the PGI team, “PGI is not just about prestige; it stands apart from the mundane. It is committed to patient care with unmatched passion. Ayushman has enabled us to provide world-class care to everyone—whether rich or poor. The free renal transplants we conduct under Ayushman are a testament to this. Our students and doctors have proven that generic medicines can work as effectively as branded ones. This is the success of PGI and the relentless efforts of our students and faculty.”
Speaking passionately to the young graduates, Prof. Lal asserted, “A degree from PGI isn’t just a certificate; it’s a testament that you can survive in any environment. It’s not just about intellectual capability—it’s about blood, sweat, commitment, and divinity. This is the weight of the responsibility you now carry. You hold a crown, in the form of your degree. Respect it, cherish it, and honor it.”
For the first time in PGIMER’s history, ethnic wear was introduced as the official dress code for the convocation. Faculty members and students donned traditional attire, complemented by a customized stole bearing the PGIMER logo. This initiative, approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, added a distinctive cultural touch to the event.
The well-attended ceremony featured invited dignitaries, professor emeritus, ex-directors, resident doctors and their families, key functionaries, heads of departments, and senior faculty, and concluded with Prof. R.K. Ratho, Dean (Academics), proposing a vote of thanks.
An engaging event was held to highlight Project Sarathi, a student-driven initiative designed to provide patient support services across various hospital units, including the AEC, ACC, and OPD. Launched at PGIMER on May 6, 2024, Project Sarathi embodies a collaborative approach to patient care, effectively integrating student energy with institutional resources for maximum impact. The initiative received considerable appreciation from dignitaries present at the event. Attendees witnessed the release of a report on Project Sarathi and enjoyed a video presentation showcasing its objectives and achievements.  (with inputs from PIB, Chandigarh)
