1863 – US President Lincoln designates last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.
1899 – J S Thurman patents motor-driven vacuum cleaner.
1906 – SOS adopted as warning signal by first conference on wireless telegraphy. (SOS remained the maritime radio distress signal until 1999, when it was replaced by the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.SOS is still recognised as a visual distress signal).
1922 – First facsimile photo sent over city telephone lines, Washington, D.C.
1952 – First video recording on magnetic tape.
1977 – Indira Gandhi arrested. Mrs Gandhi’s arrest had been the topic of discussion at almost every “informal Cabinet meeting” of the Janta Party. Industry Minister George Fernandes and Health Minister Raj Narain, and others had been pressing for Mrs Gandhi’s immediate arrest. The Prime Minister Morarji Desai had advised caution: “We must take action only according to the law,” he had warned.
1978 – First Test Tube Baby of India.

1824 – General Sam Browne. On 31 Aug 1858, then Captain Samuel James Browne of 2nd PUNJAB, had his left arm severed by a sword in a hand-to-hand combat in Seerporah, Rohilkhand, Uttar Pradesh. For this he was awarded a Victoria Cross. As compensation for the difficulty his disability caused with wearing his officer’s sword, he started wearing a wide belt supported by a narrower strap passing diagonally over the right shoulder. This later became to be used commonly by the British Army, and is known as Sam Browne belt. (pic credit-Bridgeman Prints).
1903 – Swami Ramanand Tirath, noted Freedom Fighter who led the freedom movement against Nizam of Hyderabad. Was politician, Lok Sabha member and educationist, spitual Guru..
1943 – Gurcharan Das, famous writer, media columnist and management Guru. Served as Procter & Gamble Managing Director. Has written literary and professional books like Larins Saheb, The Fine Family, The Difficulty of Being Good, India Unbound, The Elephant Paradigm, India Grows at Night etc.
1949 – JP Dutta, famous film director, who made films like .Ghulami, Batwara, Kshatriya, Border,Border2, LOC Kargil, Paltan, Refugee, UmraoJaan etc. Won Filmfare for Kargil, nomination twice, Zee Cine award and National Award for Border.
R IP: 1991- Max Cantor. American actor known for Another World, Dirty Dancing, Fear Anxiety Dispression, etc.

Assamese Wedding: On the day of the wedding, a bathing custom is followed in Assamese wedding in which the bride and groom’s mother visit the nearby river to fetch holy water for the bath. In Assamese wedding, the feast or the reception part is held prior to the mar riage ceremony. Earlier curd, rice, and jaggery were served to the guests but now a lavish reception party is hosted in which mouth-watering dishes are served.
