1845 – First Shipping Company of India started.
1866 – J Osterhoudt patents tin can with key opener.
1895 – First cartoon comic strip is printed in a newspaper.
1912 – Gopal Krishna Gokhale, at invitation of Gandhi, arrives in South Africa on a 26-day tour; he also visits Tolstoy Farm (pic credit-Wikimedia Commons).
1934 – Indian Naval Force was established. (The earliest known reference to an organisation devoted to ships in ancient India is to the Mauryan Empire from the fourth century BCE).
1951 – Dr. Shyamprasad Mukharjee established Bhartiya Jan Sangh Party.
1954 – Chandernagar, former under French possession, was made a part of West Bengal.
1957 – All India Scheduled Caste Federation formally dissolved and a new political party ‘Republican Party of India’ was formed.
1986 -Rajiv Gandhi survives assassination attempt made at Raj Ghat.
2018 – Saudi American journalist Jamal Khashoggi enters the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, never to be seen again prompting a diplomatic crisis.

1869 – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi). He was the youngest of the three sons of Karamchand alias Kaba Gandhi and his fourth wife Putlibai..
1904 – Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India (1964-66). Was born in Mughalsarai near Benaras in Uttar Pradesh. He gave the slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan after Pakistan started War on Western border and foodgrain shortage felt in the country. (America adding more strict conditions to export Wheat and other food grains to India. He was mysteriously killed Tashkent, Russia (now in Tajikistan) after signing Cease Fire Treaty with Pak military ruler Md. Ayub Khan. (pic theme by NSUI)

1906 – Raja Ravi Verma. He is remembered for his artistic work in ‘Ram Panchayatan’, ‘Vishwamitra-Menaka’, ‘Shakuntala writing a letter’, ‘Shiv Parvati’. A commemorative stamp was issued by the Postal Department on April 29, 1971 in his honour. (sample pics credit-Raja Ravi Verma Painting Archives)
1975 – Kumaraswami Kamaraj, freedom fighter, political leader. He was Tamil Nadu Chief Minister twice and Congress President during 1964-67 and was known as Kingmaker as he selected Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi as 2 PMs during his term.
2019 – Julie Gibson. American singer, Radio, TV actor from 1940s-90s. Known for roles in The Contender, Chick Carter Detector, The Feminine Touch, Are You With It, Lucky Cowboy, Blonde Ice, Barne Live in New York City etc.

Malyali Wedding: Weddings in Kerala are momentary and doesn’t take much time to wrap up the function. The Malyali weddings are held in the mornings and the conjugal ceremony is called ‘Velli’. The father of the bride welcomes the groom by washing his feet and the marriage is complete when the groom ties a ‘thali’ or a yellow thread around the bride’s neck.
