1846 – Dentist Dr. William Morton used an experimental anesthetic, Ether, for the first time on one of his patients at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for tooth extraction (pic credit-Bridgemen Images).

1862 – U.S. patent was issued for a revolving turret for battleships to the inventor, Theodore Ruggles Timby.

1882 – The world’s first hydroelectric power plant in the U.S. was opened on the Fox River, in Appleton, Wisconsin.

1906 – The world’s first international balloon race began. It was won by a coal-gas balloon, the ‘United States’.

1963 – The USSR openly lauded Indian view on Kashmir issue. This was against Pakistan’s motives.

1981 – Pakistan Commando soldiers release 66 hostages in Lahore from five Khalistan hijackers and activists of the Dal Khalsa International. Dal Khalsa is believed to have been founder by Gajinder Singh and Paramjit Singh Narang,  who were instigated to do so by Sanjay Gandhi and then Home Minister Giani Zail Singh to counter Akali Dal in Punjab.

1982 – H. Ross Perot and Jay Colburn completed the first circumnavigation of the world in a helicopter, the Spirit of Texas. Their journey began 29 days, 3 hours, and 8 minutes earlier on September 1.

1996 – Centre gives its consent to Tamil Nadu government’s decision to rename Madras as Chennai.

1881 – Rajah Annamalai Chettiar, famous musician, social worker, industrialist  and founder Governor of the Imperial Bank of India. Was awarded Padam Bhushan in 1973 (posthumusly).

1908 – Ram Dhari Singh Dinkar, famous Hindi  poet who wrote revolutionary poems, novels and religious books viz., Rashmirathi, Urvashi, Parshuram ki Pariksha,  Sanskriti ke Char Adhyay, Mitti Ki Ore, Neem Ke PatteLokdev Nehru etc. Was awarded Padam Shri, Sahitya Akademi, and Gyanpeeth awards.

1922 – Hrishikesh Mukherjee, legendary film director  and producer. Known for films like Anand,  Satyakaam, Golmaal,  Guddi, Chupke Chupke, Baawaerchi, Namak Haraam,  Mili etc.  Awarded National Award 4 times, Filmfare 7 times, Padam Bhushan  and Dada Saheb Phalke award.

1972 – Shaan,  popular Hindi, Kannada, Telugu singer.  Awarded Filmfare twice , IIFA and several awards for his music composing and singing..

Tidbits….

1907 – Motor car speed traps were protested in a letter by Lod Montagu to The Times, London. “By all means let police-traps be placed where there is any reason to think danger may exist, but … At present, the police neglect their other duties and look upon trapping as a regular sport” producing income to local government from the £5 or £10 fines for speeds of 20 or 30 mph.

You may have known….

In 2011 the number of Indian women with technical diplomas (not degrees) stood at nearly 19 million, up 146% in a decade. Compare this to non-technical diploma which is held by just 0.34 million (3.4 lakh).
