You may have known….
Exorcism by marriage: Indians believe in spirits, and lots of them. Many are a superstitious lot, with several prejudices. Horoscope is pretty elaborate in India, with several aspects taken into consideration like day, date, time, etc., down to probably the very nanosecond of birth. Accordingly, some women are said to have “mangal dosh”: such women are said to endanger the life of her husband. To exorcise her, the shocking ritual in India is to get the woman married to a tree. Another way to exorcise a maglik woman is to get her married to an animal instead of a tree. This mindless ritual is also used to rid the woman of spirits which she is believed to possess, if she is born with a deformity, cleft lip, tooth, etc. With spread of education, this tradition is hopefully on its way out.
