1950 – U. N. Assembly rejects Indian and Soviet proposal to admit Communist China.

1965 – Chinese government gives ultimatum to India to dismantle forts within four days,  in China.

2000 – Karnam Malleswari, weightlifter,  adds a glorious chapter to Indian sports history by being the first Indian woman to win an Olympic (Bronze) medal at the Sydney Olympics. She was honored with Padam Shri, Arjuna and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards.

2014 – Crowds line up at retailers across the U.S. as the Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are offered for sale; buyers are seeking to be some of the first to own the devices.

2018 – Korean joint summit in Pyongyang agrees to limit North Korea’s weapons programme and to South Korea economic cooperation.

2022 – Forest scientists engineer Diego Armando Silva discover site of the Amazon’s tallest tree, an angelim vermelho at 88.5 meters (290 feet) tall and 9.9 meters (32 feet) wide.

1839 – George Cadbury, English businessman, Quaker, social reformer and Chocolate manufacturer.

1933 – General Sunit Francis Rodrigues,PVSM, SVM,  former Indian Chief Army (1990-93) and later Governor of Punjab from 2004-10..

1958 – Lucky Ali, lyricist, singer. Son of popular comic actor, producer Mehmood. He won Filmfare award in 2001 and was nominated once.

1976 – Isha Koppikar, model and Bollywood  actor. Known for Suryavansham, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum,  Krishna Cottege, Girlfriend  etc. Won 2 Filmfare  and  Asian Network etc.

1984 – Kavya Madhavan,  Malyalam actor and child model..

1581 – Guru Ramdasji. His son Arjun Dev succeeded him and changed the offerings to the Guru into a regular tax.

1704 – Guru Govind Singh. 10th Guru of Sikhs, a warrior, philosopher and  social thinker, who became Guru at age 9,  after sacrifice of his father Guru Tegh Bahadur at the hands of Mughals at Delhi. He  founded Khalsa Panth on Baisalkhi Day in 1699  and announced that  Guru will be embodied in Granth Saheb  for future generations, and no human Guru will be appointed by Sikh Panth.

2002 – Priya Tendulkar, daughter of famous playwriter Vijay Tendulkar.  Model and Bollywood actor, known for TV shows  Rajni, Ham Panch, Swaymsidha   and films Ankur, Mumbaicha Fauzdar, Trimurti, Professor Pyarelal Sasti Dulhan Mahenga Dulha etc.
