1935 – 1st automobile to exceed 300 mph, Sir Malcolm Campbell (301.337 mph).

1940 – Hitler orders invasion in England on Sept 21, Operation-Seelowe. (ollowing the Fall of France the Nazis expected the British to seek a peace agreement, and invasion was considered as a last resort. As a precondition, the proposed operation required both air and naval superiority over the English Channel and proposed landing sites, neither of which the Germans ever achieved during the war. Operation Sea Lion {German word Seelowe} was postponed indefinitely and never carried out. The German High Command had no confidence that the plan was feasible, and most historians agree it had little possibility of success).

1967 – Sweden begins driving on right-hand side of road. Today almost 65% countries drive on right-had side.

1976 – The unmanned spacecraft Viking II landed on Mars and took the first pictures of the surface of Mars.

1987 – Vishwanathan Anand, 17, becomes India’s first and the world’s youngest Grandmaster.

1994 – Indian government decides to disinvest government holding in 21 Public Sector Units including ITI, IOC and ITDC.

1995 – Ram Jethmalani (lawyer and MP) launches a new party, Bharatiya Lok Panchayat, to rid the country of its evils.

2014 – Iran is strengthening gender segregation policies, forbidding women to work in public areas of restaurants and seeking separation from men in office settings; the move will increase the 18.9% female jobless rate.

2017 – 1.4 ton WWII bomb defused in Frankfurt, Germany with 60,000 people evacuated, the largest postwar.

2019 – Walmart says it will stop selling handguns and some ammunition and ask customers not to openly carry firearms.

2020 – MacKenzie Scott, philanthropist and ex-wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, becomes world’s richest woman worth $68 billion.

1926 – Uttam Kumar, omne of the modst popular Bengali  and Hindi film actor, screenwrite, director, producer. Famous for roles in  Saptapadi, Antony Firingee,  Nayak, Deya Neya,  Harano Sur, Amaanush, etc.   Won 2 National Film awards,  2 Filmfare and several other awards.

1952 – Shakti Kapoor, Bollywood actor, mostly in Comic,  Villain roles.

1976 – Vivek Oberoi, Bollywood, actor, producer. Known for films Masti, Shootout at Lokhandawala,  Saathiya, Grand Masti,  Prince, Krish 3 and 3 Idiots etc. Won 2 Filmfare, IIFA, Screen and several other awards.

RIP….

1997 – Anjaan (Lalji Pandey), well known lyricist. (on the left, with V Shantaram and musician Anandji. Won 3 Filmfare awards and  Padma Shri. Wrote about1500 songs for 300 films. (Video credit-Zee Music Classic)

You may have known….

Funeral procession: In south India (Tamil Nadu), Funeral procession is led by load drum music and certain relatives or outsiders dancing to the tune          (Ottan Koothu), in front of the funeral. This they say, it  symbolises giving a farewell like  a king.
