413 – A lunar eclipse frightened the sailors of the Athens fleet and thus affected the outcome of a battle in the Peloponnesian War. Their commander, Nicias, consulted the soothsayers and postponed the departure for 27 days. This delay gave an advantage to their enemies, the Syracusans, who then defeated the entire Athenian fleet and killed Nicias.
1604 – Guru Granth Sahib was established in the Golden Temple of Amritsar.
1783 – 1st hydrogen balloon flight (unmanned); reaches 900 m altitud (pic- credit-Pinterest).
1939 -Sir Frank Whittle and Hans J.P. von Ohain invented a craft that became the first jet-powered airplane to fly. It remained airborne for seven minutes.
1950 – The BBC transmitted in Britain the first cross-Channel live television programme by microwave relay links.
1990 – The Cabinet Committee on political affairs decides to put a proposal before the Indian Parliament providing five to ten per cent of Central Government jobs reserved for economically weaker sections.
1992 – The President of India issues two ordinances making it mandatory for new medical and dental colleges to obtain prior approval of the Medical and Dental Councils of India before their establishment.
2018 – UN releases report saying Myanmar military leaders should face genocide and crimes against humanity charges for violence against Rohingya.

1908 – Donald Bradman, Top Australian cricketer who scored first Triple century 339 (300 in one day July 11) in 1930 Vs England and has 29 Test centuries to his credit. Also scored 100 runs in three 8-ball overs; 33, 40, 27 (total 6,996 runs).
1931 – Sri Chinmoy, Indian spiritual guru who taught meditation in America (Pic credit-Wikipedia).
1980 – Neha Dhupia, Bollywood actor, model Femina Miss India title winner in 2002. Acted in films like Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya, Mithya, Ekkees Toppon ki Salaami, Phas Gaye Obama, Villain, Rush etc. She won Screen award for role in Tumhari Sulu (pic-credit-Stars Unfolded).

1976 – Mukesh (Chand Mathur), one of the most popular playback singer, who sang about 1300 songs. He won a National Film and 4 Filmfare awards. His songs in Anari, Awara, Shri 420, Rajnigandha etc. (song credit- Shemaroo)
1979 – Admiral of the Fleet Louis, Earl Mountbatten of Burma, last Viceroy of India, and three companions, two of them children, killed by the IRA when his boat was blown up
2006 – Hrishikesh Mukherjee, most popular Indian film director/producer. known for Anand, Golmaal, Chupke Chiupke, Guddi, Baawaerchi, Naman Haram etc. He won several important awards including Dada Saheb Phalke, National and Filmfare awards for his works.

Saur i.e. two negatives make a positive: Saur village of Uttarakhand is famous for its worship of Duryodhana. Such is their faith that there is a temple to his name there. Considered to be a negative persona, it is delightful to know that he too is praised and looked up to. Apart from Duryodhana, there is a temple of Karna, another pivotal character of Mahabharata, at Deorah, Uttaranchal.
