1588 – Attacking Spanish Armada of 130 ships defeated and scattered by English defenders.

1870 – America’s first asphalt pavement was laid in Newark.

1874 – Major Walter Copton Wingfield patents a portable tennis court.

1914 – Transcontinental telephone service began. It was celebrated with a telephone conversation between Thomas A. Watson in San Francisco and Alexander Graham Bell in New York.

1927 – The first iron lung (electric respirator) was installed at Bellevue hospital in New York for the post war polio epidemic.

1949 – BBC radio begins broadcasting.

1979 – Choudhary Charan Singh was sworn in as the fifth Prime Minister of India heading the Janata (S)-Congress coalition. He held this office till January 14, 1980.

1980 – India won Gold Medal in Hockey at Moscow Olympics.

1983 – First Pilot-less Aeroplane of India was tested successfully by the Aeronautical Development Establishment near Kolar.

1987 – India and Sri Lanka sign peace accord at Colombo in a bid to end the 5-year old ethnic trouble. This stance taken thereafter by the LTTE added several dimensions to the scenario. It was a multi-purpose role that Indian  Navy has been required to play. and sendning IPKF.  (leading to alleged assasination of PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1991)

1993 – Two bills seeking to delink religion from politics and to empower the EC to debar parties with religious names introduced in Lok Sabha.

1999 – Bandh in Mumbai to protest against the verdict barring Bal Thackeray from voting and contesting any election till December 10, 2001.

2015 – Microsoft launches Windows 10.

2023 – 46,000 year old minuscule pair of roundworms revived from their cryptobiotic state after being frozen in Siberian permafrost – proves life can be stopped then restarted according to scientists.

1904 – J. R. D. Tata,  veteran industrialist, piolet and philanthropist. He started Tata Airlines in 1930s,  Tata Air Mail in 1932,  later named Air India. Also founded Tata Motors, TCS, Titan Industries and Voltas. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1957 and Bharat Ratna in 1992.

1953 – Anup Jalota, famous Bhajan and Ghazal singer. Also knwn as Bhajan Samrat. Awarded  by GOI by Padam Shri  in 2012.  (audio credit-Red Ribbon Musik)

1959 – Sanjay Dutt,  famous Bollywood actor. Son of veterans  Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt. Acted in Rocky, Vidhata, Mera Faisla and a blockbuster Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006. Some Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films.  He has won two Filmfare Awards, two IIFA Awards, two Bollywood Movie Awards, three Screen Awards, three Stardust Awards, two Zee Cine Awards, and a Global Indian Film Awards.

2003 – Johnny Walker, veteran comedian actor. (real name Badruddin Jamaluddin). Acted in about 300  films, like Pyaasa,  C.I.D., Aar Paar, Mr. & Mrs 55, Kagaz Ke Phool, Baazi, Duniya, Madhumati, Chaudhwin Ka Chaand, Chhote Nawab, Taxi Driver etc.  Nominated to Filmfare awards 5 times and won 2.  (pic credit-Veethi)

2009 – Gayatri Devi, Extremely beautful and graceful Maharani of Jaipur. Born princess of Cooch Behar, skilled Polo player, horse rider and shooter.  Was elected to Lok Sabha on Swatantra Party ticket 3 times from 1962, (party founded by first Indian Viceroy of India, C.  Rajagopalachary, She later joined  Jan Sangh/BJP  and became Vice President  (pic with Princess Diana credit -Pinterest).

Elephanta Caves: These are a network of sculpted caves located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri (literally “the city of caves”) in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The island, located on an arm of the Arabian Sea, consists of two groups of caves—the first is a large group of five Hindu caves, the second, a smaller group of two Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves contain rock cut stone sculptures, representing the Shaiva Hindu sect, dedicated to the Lord Shiva.ning. Have a nice day.
