1800 – The British Indian Government establishes the Fort William College to promote Urdu, Hindi and other vernaculars of sub continent.

1806 – The Vellore Mutiny is the first instance of a mutiny by Indian sepoys against the British East India Company.

1925 – Meher Baba begins his silence of 44 years. His followers still observe Silence Day on this date in commemoration.

1947 – Muhammad Ali Jinnah is recommended as the first Governor General of Pakistan by then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Clement Attlee.

1949 – Sunil Gavaskar, veteran cricketer. Also called Little Master. He scoredCenturies in both innings of his first Test  in 1971 and a series total of 774. He was the first  Indian to score 10,000  Test runs and beat Australian legend  Don Bradman record. He was awarded Arjuna Award,  Padam Bhushan. listed in ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, Wisdon Book of Cricket.

1951 – Rajnath Singh, veteran BJP politician. Was Chief Minister  of UP once,  BJP President twice, Union Home Minister of India (2014-19) and current Defence Minister (2019-).

2014 – Zohra Sehgal, veteran actor , dancer and choreographer. Known for roles in Harem, Neecha Nagar, Bhaji on The Beach,  Saawaria, Chalo Ishq Ladayen Chini Kum. Awarded Sangeet Natak Academy award, Padam Shri and Padam Bhushan and Kalidas Samman.
