1782 – British-French sea battle at Negapatam, off India. (The French ttempted to take the British held port of Negapatam but were frustrated and had to withdraw).

1858 – A shoemaker named Lyman Blake of Abington town patented the first shoe-sole machine. His invention revolutionised the shoe industry.

1885 – French scientist Louis Pasteur and his colleagues injected the first of 14 daily doses of rabbit spinal cord suspensions containing progressively inactivated rabies virus into 9-year-old Joseph Meister, who had been severely bitten by a rabid dog 2 days earlier. This first immunisation was successful.

1886 – Horlick’s of Wisconsin, US, offered the first malted milk to the public.

1892 – Dadabhai Naoroji elected as first Indian Member of Parliament in Britain.

1905 – John Walker’s fingerprints were the first ones to be exchanged by police officials in Europe and America.

1920 – A radio compass was used for first time for aircraft navigation. An F5L left Hampton Roads and flew directly to the battleship Ohio, 94 miles at sea in a position unknown to the pilot.

1924 – 1st photo sent experimentally across Atlantic by radio, US-England.

1928 – 1st all-talking motion picture shown in NY.

1960 – The Indian President promulgates the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA).

1992 – The Centre decides to allow TV and Radio time slots for private producers in India.

2000 – India, Nepal sign agreement to set up a specialist joint unit to counter terrorism and share information about criminals operating along the border.

2011 – Exiled Tibetans are banned from celebrating the Dalai Lama’s birthday in Nepal; the authorities fear the gatherings would become anti-Chinese.

2020 – America officially begins withdrawing from the World Health Organization.

1901 – Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, great social reformer, politician, freedom fighter and Hindu  leader. He died in Srinagar jail fighting Article 370 and special status to J&K. He was the co-founder of the Hindu Mahasabha Bharatiya Jana Sangh, of which BJP is the successor party, renamed in April 1980..

1927 – Prabhjot Kaur, great poet and nationalist Punjabi author.  Wrote stories like Pabbi, Daddoo’s Day Out,  Jeena Bi Ek Ada Hai, The Quite Riot of Robin Shute, Greatful, Great Plateau,  My Thoughts, Hope+Pray= Miracle,  etc.  She was awarded Sahitya Kala Award alongwith her husband Narendrapal Singh for Collection of Poems-Pabbi and Padma Shri Award.  Also nominated to Punjab Vidhan Parishad. Awarded by Poetry Society of America, with Distinguioshed Order of Poetry.

1935 – 14th Dalai Lama, Tibetan spiritual leader of Tibet’s Lamaistic Buddhists. Enthroned as head of Tibet on Feb. 22, 1940, was forced  into exile by Chinese Govt. in March 1959. He now lives in Dharamsala (H.P.) alongwith Tibet’s Govt. in Exile. Tibet is now under Chinese control. Dalai Lama was awarded Nobel Prize in Dalai Lama

1946 – Sylvester Stallone, popular American actor/director. Known for films Rambo, Rockey etc. Won mGolden Globe and many other awards. (pic credit-The Hollywood Reporter)

1985 – Ranveer Singh, Bollywood actor. Known for roles in Padmavat, Simba, Gully Boy, Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani etc. Won many film awards. (pic credit-Zoom TV)

RIP….

1986 – Babu Jagjivan Ram, politician and freedom fighter. His uninterrupted representation in the Parliament from 1936 to 1986 is a world record.

2002 – Dhirubhai Ambani, businessman and founder of Reliance Industries in Bombay with his cousin.

2011 – Mani Kaul, veteran film director. He directed Duvidha, Uski roti, The Cloud Door, Nazar, One Day Before Rainy Season etc. Won National ilm Award and many others.  Before My Eyes on Kashmir turmoil.
