1661 – Portugal gives Tangier in Morocco & Bombay in India to English King Charles II.
1760 – Maratha army, under Sadashiv Rao Bhau and Vishvas Rao, captured Delhi in the 3rd Battle of Panipat. But his victory was short lived as Ahmed Shah Abdali’s forces encircled the Capital and broke supply lines, eventually forcing Marathas’ defeat and partly moving to Pune for safety (pic credit-The Indian Portrait).
1819 – 1st savings bank in US (Bank of Savings in NYC) opens its doors.
1886 – The first U.S. newspaper page set by Linotype (short for “Line of type”) was the New York Daily Tribune for this day’s editorial page.
1886 – Karl Benz drove the first automobile in the world in Mannheim, Germany, reaching a top speed of 10 mph .
1908 – Bal Gangadhar Tilak Is Arrested for Sedition by the British.
1929 – Foam rubber was developed at the Dunlop Latex Development Laboratories in Birmingham.
1952 – The first surgical operation in the U.S. to expose the heart’s mitral valve for a prolonged time was undertaken by Dr Forest Dewey Dodrill. The patient, a 41-year-old man, was provided with The Michigan Heart as a substitute for the lower left ventricle.
1961 – Three men were killed in the first fatal nuclear accident in the U.S. when an experimental reactor exploded.
1987 – British millionaire Richard Branson and Per Lindstrand became the first to cross the Atlantic by hot-air balloon, named Virgin Atlantic Flyer. They travelled a distance of 2,900 miles from Sugarloaf Mountain, Maine, in 33 hours to set a new record for hot air ballooning. (Three years later, they crossed the Pacific in another balloon from Japan to Arctic Canada, a distance of 6,700 miles, breaking all existing records with speeds of up to 245 miles per hour).
1996 – 25 to 30% hike in prices of petroleum products in India.
2012 – After Secretary of State Hillary Clinton apologised for a NATO airstrike that killed 26 Pakistani soldiers and officials, Pakistan reopens key NATO supply routes into Afghanistan.
2019 – Heavy monsoon rains strike Mumbai and surrounding Maharashtra state in India killing at least 43, worst flooding in a decade.
2019 – US produces the most waste per head globally and recycles the least at 35% according to new research by Verisk Maplecroft, Germany recycles the most at 68%.
2022 – Sri Lanka says it has less than one day’s worth of fuel, as its economic crisis deepens, closing schools and stopping public transport. India sends some urgent supplies to help the country.

1996 – Raaj Kumar, Bollywood superstar. (real name-Kulbhushan Pandit). He was known for delivering dialogues prefixed with a “Jaani”. Acted in films like God and Gun, Waqt, Dil Ek Mandir, Neel Kamal, Kaajal, Tiranga, Desh Dushman etc. Won 2 Filmfare awards, nominated several times.
