1781 – British troops halted Hyder Ali’s progress. He was checked by Eyree Coote after the battle of Porto Novo and became subdued. (He was succeeded by Tipu Sultan).
1858 – The Wallace-Darwin theory of evolution was first published.

1862 – Calcutta High Court was inaugurated.

1905 – Albert Einstein introduces his theory of relativity.
1934 – The first X-ray photograph of the whole body taken in a one-second exposure, using ordinary clinical conditions. The one-piece radiograph was made by Arthur W. Fuchs of the Eastman Kodak Company.

1947 – Independence of India Bill passed.

1955 – Imperial Bank of India was inaugurated and was renamed as State Bank of India.

1967 – BBC2 began its first scheduled, but limited, colour television service in England with a 4-hr outside broadcast (OB) from the Wimbledon Tennis Championship. The OB used the only colour mobile control room that the BBC had available.

1968 – Asia’s biggest nuclear research lab started in New Delhi.

1975 – PM Indira Gandhi declared a 20-point economic programme.

1997 – The Sankaracharyas of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam were given a warm reception at the Golden Temple, Amritsar.

2014 – Japan updates its constitution to allow self-defence forces to assist in defending allied nations that come under attack. (The change does not extend to assisting in other external military conflicts).

2015 – US and Cuba announce agreement to re-open embassies and establish full diplomatic ties.

2021 – President Xi Jinping makes a defiant address at celebrations in Tiananmen Square, Beijing to mark the 100 year centenary of the Chinese Communist Party.

1913 – General Kumarmanglam Parasshiv Prabhakar, former Chief of Indian Army from 1967-69.

1927 – Chandrashekhar, former Prime Minister of India.

1938 – Pt. Hariprasad Chaursia, famous flute player. Was awarded Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Academy and  Dinanath Mangeshkar awards.

1961 – Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales. First wife of King Charles III. She died in a car accident on August 31, 1997 (pic credit-Woman’s World) .

1961 – Kalpana Chawla, the first Indo-American woman astronaut, who went into space in 1997. But unfortunately she died in her second space mission when returning from space in Columbia Space Shuttle alingwith 6 other US astronauts on Feb. 01, 2003. Was awarded NASA Special Medal and US Congressional  Space Medal of Honor.

1985 – Air Chief Marshal L M Katre, Chief of Air Staff. Died in office (pic credit-Chankya Defence Foundation).

2004 – Marlon Brando, famous American actor and activist. Known for roles in films The Godfather, Last Tango in Paris. Won several awards like 2 Academy, 2 Golden Globe and one Cannes and 3 British Academy Awards.

1997 – Nevada Athletic Commission suspends Mike Tyson for biting Holyfield.
