1855 – Santhals of Rajmahal Hills, Santhal-Paragana, Bihar started their agitation against ill treatment by Britishers, revenue officers, police, landlords, and moneylenders under the leadership of Sindhu and Kanhu at Bhoranadhighi, Bengal.

1859 – Charles Blondin is 1st to cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope.

1908 – At around 7:15 am, northwest of Lake Baikal, Russia, a huge fireball nearly as bright as the Sun was seen crossing the sky. Minutes later, there was a huge flash and a shock wave felt up to 400 miles away. Over Tunguska, a meteorite over 50-m diameter, travelling at over 60,000 mph penetrated Earth’s atmosphere, heated to about 10,000 ºC and detonated 6 to10 km above the ground. The blast released the energy of 10-50 Megatons of TNT, destroying 2,200 sq km of forest leaving no trace of life.

1910 – The first trials in the U.S. investigating the use of an airplane to drop bombs were conducted by pilot Glenn H. Curtiss.

1914 – Mahatma Gandhi’s 1st arrest after campaigning for Indian rights in South Africa.

1948 – The transistor was demonstrated by its inventors, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain, scientists at the Bell Telephone Laboratory.

1965 – Cease-fire was agreed under UN auspices between India and Pakistan, who signed treaty to stop the war at Rann of Kutch.

1896 – The first U.S. patent for an electric stove was patented by William.S. Hadaway, Jr., in New York City.

1972 – One second was added to the world’s time in order to keep the super-accurate atomic clocks in step with the Earth’s rotation. Since the adoption of this system in 1972 it has been necessary to add 27 seconds to Coordinated Universal Time.

1986 – Mizoram became a State of India.

1995 – CNN launches a 24-hour news channel in partnership with Doordarshan.

1999 – India reiterates that any talks will resume only after Pakistan’s unconditional withdrawal from Kargil. Meanwhile, Indian Army continues to attack the Tiger Hill area and captures two positions in close proximity to Jubar features.

2019 – President Donald Trump becomes first sitting US president to set foot in North Korea in the Korean Demilitarized Zone meeting Kim Jong Un.

2021 – American Abhimanyu Mishra becomes the youngest chess grandmaster ever at 12 years and 4 months, surpassing Sergey Karjakin.

2022 – New York is named world’s wealthiest city, home to 345,600 millionaires, and 59 billionaires, with Tokyo and San Francisco making up the top three.
