1802 – US Academy at West Point founded. (Also known as West Point, Army, The Academy or simply The Point, is a four-year course coeducational federal service academy located in West Point, New York. Tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honour Code, which states that “a cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.” The academy bases a cadet’s leadership experience as a development of all three pillars of performance: academics, physical and military).

1891 – Thomas A. Edison was issued a U.S. patent for an innovation for a “Phonograph”.

1905 – Albert Einstein published his analysis of Max Planck’s quantum theory and its application to light. His article appeared in Annalen der Physik. Though no experimental work was involved, it was for these insights that Einstein earned his Nobel Prize.

1964 – Lal Bahadur Shastri became the second Prime Minister of India when the country was shocked by Jawaharlal Nehru’s death and Indo-China war. Shastri gave the quotation “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan” which motivated the war-affected Indians to boost their morale.

1967 – Israel captures the Golan Heights from Syria.

1986 – First AIDS death was reported from a private hospital in Mumbai.

1999 – The Indian army occupies two key positions in the Batalik sector.

2014 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would begin targeting assets stored overseas in an effort to avoid taxes; the Indian government estimates that up to $2 trillion may be in hiding; the nation follows China and Russia in magnitude of off-shored wealth.

2023 – Four Colombian children are found safe after surviving 40 days in the Colombian jungle after their plane crashed killing the three adults on board.

1923 – Air Chief Marshal Idris Hassan Latif, 10th  Indian Air Force Chief from 1978-81. Then was appointed Governor of Maharashtra from 1982-85.

1948 – Laloo Prasad Yadav, Bihar politician became famous during JP Movement in 197-77. Former Chief Minister and Union Railway Minister.

1949 – Kiran Bedi, the first woman Indian Police Service Officer. Was Lt. Governor of Puducherry. Wrote several books on governance and women’s issues.

1975 – Amisha Patel, grand-daughter of former Congress CM of Maharashtra and Bollywood actor. Acted in Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Gadar series, Bhool Bhulayya, Hamraaz, Race 2 etc. Won several Filmfare, Zee Cine awards.

1985 – Sonam Kapoor,  Bollywood  actor. Daughter of popular actor Anil Kapoor, Acted in Delhi-6, Saawariya, Blind, Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo, Khoobsurat, Raanjhanaa, Veere Di Wedding etc.

RIP….

1991 – Raj Khosla, famous film screen-writer producer and director. Made several blockbuster films like CID, Bombai ka Baabu, Solva Saal, Woh Kaun Thi? Ek Musaafir Ek Hasina, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Do Raaste, Kachhe Dhaage, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Dostana etc. Won 3 Filmfare awasrds and a postal stamp was released to pay  him tribute.

2011 – M. F. Husain, artist, a controversial  painter as he drew  many paintings depicting Hindu Gods in bad light. Was famous as a modern  painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group. (pic credit-Indiearts)

You may have known….

Earth’s days are indeed getting longer , with projections indicating they might eventually stretch to 25 hours in the next centuries. However, this is happening very, very slowly.
