1661 – Isaac Newton admitted as a student to Trinity College, Cambridge.

1783 – The first hot-air balloon ascent – unmanned – flew for ten minutes. It was made by the French brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier.

1876 – Bananas become popular in US, at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

1882 – Storm & floods hit Bombay; about 100,000 die.

1882 – John Mitchell Lyons, a railway clerk, was issued a Canadian patent for his “Improvements in Baggage Checks and Coupon Tickets”. He devised this now familiar way to track and identify luggage.

1937 – Henry Ford initiates 32 hour work week.

1944 – German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel  known as Desert Fox in the Hitler’s Army, served both World Wars. Went on leave just before WW-II, D-Day landings by the Allies. 1977 – First personal computer, the Apple II, went on sale. It was the invention of Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.

1984 – Operation ‘Blue Star’ was launched. Army commandos stormed into Golden Temple in Amritsar to flush out the terrorists and other anti-government elements. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and over 325 people were killed in the temple.

1989 – Missile `Trishul’ tested successfully.

1994 – India test-fires a missile capable of reaching targets in China.

2013 – The first article based on NSA leaked documents by Edward Snowden are published by the Guardian Newspaper in the UK.

2019 – Average person ingests 50,000 pieces of microplastic a year and breathes in similar amount according to first-ever such study published in journal “Environmental Science and Technology”.

1952 – Mukesh Bhatt,  Gujarati Brahmin and Hindi  film actor, producer/director. Yonger borther of veteran Mahesh Bhatt. He produced Aashiqui, Raaz, Murder, Sadak etc. (pic credit-The Statesman)

1961 – Ramesh Krishnan, a prolific Indian tennis player. Son of legendary tennis player Ramanathan Krishnanan,  he won Wimbledon and French Open Singles titles. He also coached Indian tennis teams later. Was awarded Padam Shri and Arjuna Award.

1972 – Yogi Aditya Nath, former Mahant of Guru Gorakhnath Math,, firebrand BJP politician.  Won Lok Sabha elections 5 times from 1998 to 2014. Now Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath.

1988 – Ajinkiya Rahane, veteran Bombay Ranji and former Indian national team captain. He’s  Chennai Super Kings team  member also. Awarded Anjuna award for cricket in 2016.

RIP….

1973 – Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar, second Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was known to his friends and followers as ‘Guruji’. He nurtured the RSS into an effective and disciplined grassroots organisation.
