1756 – Fort William, the English stronghold in Bengal, was surrendered to Siraj-ud-Daulah.
1857 – The first practical U.S. chain-stitch sewing machine was patented by a farmer, James E. A. Gibbs.
1896 – The first radio patent was issued to Guglielmo Marconi in England for his wireless telegraphy apparatus.
1928 – Kraft’s Velveeta Cheese was invented. When melted, it was as smooth as velvet (hence its name), and it would never curdle when heated.
1954 – The first test of a VTOL airplane takes place. It was known as a “Tail Sitter,” but as prototype to test the concept, its glory flared, and faded in a matter of months.
1964 – Lal Bahadur Shastri elected 2nd Prime Minister of India after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death. .
1990 – Union Government set up a tribunal to settle the Cauvery water issue between Tamil Nadu & Karnataka.
2013 – Columbia University researchers believe the new material, graphene, even if stitched together, is the strongest material in the world.

1955 – Nandan Nilekani, Indian entrepreneur, co-founder of IT giant Infosys and a politician. Founding chairman of UIDAI, the Aadhaar Card initiative.
1956 – Mani Ratnam, film director, screenwriter and producer. He made famous films like, Rosa, Bombay and Dil se, Nayakam. He was awarded Padam Shree, 2 National and 4 Filmfare awards and many more.
1987 – Sonakshi Sinha, Bollywood actor, daughter of veteran actor politician Shatrughan Sinha. Acted in films like Dabangg, Singh is King, Kalank, Khandaani Shafakhana, Bhuj, Double XXL etc. Won a filmfare and other awards (pic credit – Facebbok).

1988 – Raj Kapoor, famous film actor, director and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee.
2004 – Dom Moraes, writer and poet, son of veteran journalist Frank Moraes. Dom also wrote biography of legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar in 1987.He wrote many famous books like My Son’s Father, Never at Home and Letter to My Mother and John Nobody etc.
