1869 – Thomas Edison of Boston, received his first patent. It was for an “electrographic vote recorder.” The device was the first of its kind, and would enable a legislator to register a vote either for or against an issue by turning a switch to the right or left.
1874 – East India Company was dissolved.
1880 -The first pay telephone service in the United States, for public use went into service.
1916 – Lokmanya Tilak roared ”Swaraj Mera Janamsidh Adhikar Hai” (Freedom is my birthright’‘ at Ahmednagar.
1935 – Driving test & license plates introduced in England. The first person in Britain to take the test and pass is Mr R.E.L.BEERE. The son of Mr R.E.L.BEERE. still has the certificate 00001 signed on behalf of the (then) Minister of Transport.
1938 – Superman created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster made his first appearance in D.C. Comics’ Action Comics Series issue #1 which sold for 10 cents.
1939 -1st boxing match to be televised; Lon Nova defeats Max Baer.
1946 – Television licences were first issued in Britain and were sold at Post Offices. Television services had been suspended during WW II. A Mickey Mouse cartoon was being shown when TV service was suddenly blacked out for defence reasons on 1 Sep 1939. That same cartoon was shown on 8 Jun 1946 when television re-opened to cover the Victory Parade.
1947 – The Doomsday Clock appeared for the first time, as the fourth quadrant of a clock face with its hands at 7 minutes to midnight.
1955 – India’s Untouchability (Offence) Act comes into force.
1958 – Following a long political crisis over the revolt in Algeria, Charles de Gaulle is called out of retirement to head a new emergency government as a virtual dictator for a 6-month period to bring the country back together.
1959 – The Chinese occupy Tibet and Dalai Lama flees to India (pic credit-Bridgeman images).
1961 – Regular FM stereo radio broadcasting with a multiplexed signal began in the U.S.
1972 – Space Commission and Department of Space was set up. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) brought under Department of Space (DOS).
1980 – 1st transmission of CNN, the Cable News Network.
1990 – In a historic meeting between President George Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev they sign an agreement to end production of chemical weapons and begin the destruction of reserves of chemical weapons.
2001 – The king, queen and seven other members of the royal family in Nepal are shot dead after the heir to the throne Crown Prince Dipendra went on a rampage with a gun before turning it on himself.
2014 – India officially divided the state of Andhra Pradesh to create the nation’s 29th state, Telangana; Hyderabad will act as joint capital for both states for the next decade.
2017 – US President Donald Trump announces the US is withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement.
2020 – US President Trump threatens to employ the military to quell protests across the country sparked by the death of George Floyd then walks with staff to St. John’s Church.
2022 – Turkey officially changes its name to Türkiye at the United Nations and internationally.

1842 – Satyendranath Tagore, First IAS Officer under British rule, writer, composer, social reformer and literateur. Was a Member of Brahmo Samaj
1929 – Nargis, legendary Bollywood heroine. Known for her roles in Adalat, Pardesi, Mother India, Shri 420, Awara, Barasat, Jagte Raho etc. She won National, Filmfare, Stardust and International awards.
1970 – R. Madhavan, actor, producer, and screenwriter. Acted in Zero, Nashabvandi, Rocketary, Dhokha etc. Won special appreciation for his role in 3 Idiots. Won 4 Filmfare and one Tamil Nadu state award.
1985 – Dinesh Karthik, proloific Indian opening cricketer.

1984 – Nana Palsikar, veteran Bollywood actor, known for Do Bigha Zamin, Daaera, Prem Parbat, Kanoon, Mein Chup Rahoongi etc. Won 2 Filmfare awards.
1996 – Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, politician, 6th President of India.

Walking was a competitive sport in the US in 19th century. Contestants had to circle the 1/8-mile track (of what is now Madison square) for six days straight and reach a distance of at least 450 miles, and whoever travelled farthest was declared the winner.
