1553 – Flemish woman introduces practice of starching linen into England.

1639 – Delhi’s Red fort construction commenced by laying the Foundation Stone by Shah Jahan. This fort was completed on May 13, 1646.

1813 – First patent for rubber was issued.

1820 – Thomas Hancock introduced use of rubber in clothing where some elasticity was useful, such as braces (suspenders) or slip-on boots.

1913 – The first U.S. patent for a hookless fastening for universal use was issued to Gideon Dundback of New Jersey.

1954 – India accepted Tibet as a part of China.

2015 – A new birdlike dinosaur, Yi qi, has been discovered in China; the fossils suggest that it lived about 160 million years ago and had membranous, bat-like wings that not been seen in other dinosaur species.

1919 – Ustad Allah Rakha, popular Tabla player and classical musician.

1936 – Zubin Mehta, famous India music conductor., practised Western classical orchestra. His father Mehil Mehta  was the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra, and son received his early musical education from his father. He was awarded Padam Bhushan and Padam Vibhushan. He was nominated to a Grammy award 18 times. Also received Golden Medal of Honour from the City of Munich. (pic credit-Forbe’s India)

1980 – Alfred Hitchcock, English film director.

1999 – Mohan Gokhale, theatre anf film actor. Known for roles in Saraansh, Sparsh, Mirch Masala. (pic credit-Facebook)

1999 – Kidar Sharma, film director,  producer, lyricist and playright. Fampous for songs in Bawre Nain, Jogan, Hamari Yaad Ayegi, Neel Kamal (old) , Chitralekha Suhaag Raat, Neki aur Badi etc.  Won a National and sevral other Cine awards (pic credit-Pinterest).

2020 – Irfan Khan, Bollywood actor. Done films like  Life of Pi, Angrezi Medium,  Hindi Medium, Jurassic World, Maqbool, Slumdog Millionaire, The Lunch Box etc. Awarded Padam Shri, 5 Filmfare, IIFa and National Award. He died of cancer in 2020.
