On this day, 29 Feb….

1692 – Sarah Osborne, Sarah Good, and Tituba, a slave woman, were arrested in Salem Township, US, charged with using witchcraft to inflict suffering on four girls. AccusationPurandar1s of witchcraft spread and 20 accused witches were eventually executed between 10 Jun and 22 Sep 1692. Sarah Goodwas hanged on 19 Jul 1692. The Salem witchcraft trials provide a subject for modern commentary by abnormal and social psychologists.

1776 – The famous Purandar treaty signed between Britishers and Marathas. Agreement between British Colonel Upton and the ministers of Pune was called Treaty of Purandar. (pioc credit-X.com)

1880 – The St. Gotthard Tunnel was connected, linking Switzerland and Italy, when workers boring from both ends met and broke through the last rock wall remaining between them. It is 15-km long. About 200 construction workers had died during the years of digging, many from water inrushes, others crushed by equipment and from Mohammad Alidisease. Swiss engineer and tunnel surveyor, Louis Favre, suffered a fatal heart attack inside the tunnel in 1879.

1896 – Morarji Ranchhodji Desai, a Gandhian and fourth Prime Minister of India. Recipient of Bharat Ratna. He was also former Chief Minister of Bombay Province. He was also givern Nishan e Pakistan, the highest civilian honour in Pak, for allegedly divulging secret information of our  RAW operatives knowing Pakistan plans to explode an Atom Bomb in Sialkot.

Desai1904 – Rukmini Devi Arundale, renowned Bharat Natyam dancer. She was nominated to Rajya Shabha in 1952 and introduced the Bill for the “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals”. She was offered Ptrresident’s post but refused and prefered to persue her clsssical dance. (pic credit-Rediff.com)
