16th Gen of Diwan Todar Mal Keeps Langar Tradition Alive at Shaheedi Jor Mela
Descendants continue to serve langar as a tribute to the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri….
Punjab : The 16th generation of Diwan Todar Mal’s descendants continues a centuries-old tradition by organizing a langar at Fatehgarh Sahib during the Shaheedi Jor Mela, commemorating the martyrdom of Sahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh, Baba Fateh Singh, and their grandmother Mata Gujri.
Mandeep Kaur, a member of the Todar Mal family, explained that they serve langar as directed by the divine spirit of the Sahibzadas. “We serve what the Sahibzadas tell us, whether it’s candies for children or hot milk for devotees,” she said, while distributing langar items like fruits, dal chawal, and rajma chawal.
This annual service traces its origins back to Diwan Todar Mal, who, as a wealthy merchant in Sirhind, purchased land for the cremation of the martyred Sahibzadas, using gold coins stacked vertically. His selfless act is still remembered today, with the family continuing to honor the legacy of service and sacrifice.
For the Todar Mal family, organizing this langar is not just a tradition but a spiritual commitment to the principles of Sikhism—service to humanity and respect for the martyrs.
