132 Farmers Released from Patiala Jail Overnight..
Arrested at Khanauri Border, Only 17 Still in Custody…
Patiala : In a significant development, 132 farmers who were arrested at the Khanauri border during the ongoing protests were released overnight from Patiala Jail. The jail authorities confirmed their release, stating that only 17 farmers remain in custody. These farmers were detained amid clashes with security forces while marching towards Delhi to press for their demands, including legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and loan waivers.
According to sources, the decision to release the farmers came after intense discussions between farmer unions and government representatives. Family members and fellow protesters welcomed their release, expressing relief and vowing to continue their struggle for farmers’ rights. Many of the released individuals alleged that they were detained without valid reasons and claimed they were subjected to harsh treatment while in custody.
The Patiala Jail administration stated that the remaining 17 farmers are still under legal proceedings, and authorities are reviewing their cases. Meanwhile, farmer leaders have reiterated their demand for the unconditional release of all arrested protesters. They have also called for a fresh round of negotiations with the government to address their grievances.
Tensions had escalated at the Punjab-Haryana border in recent weeks, with police using tear gas and barricades to stop farmers from advancing. The protests have seen widespread support from across the country, with political leaders and social activists condemning the use of force against the demonstrators. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a leading farmers’ organization, has warned of intensified protests if all detained farmers are not released immediately.
Authorities in Punjab have assured that the situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are being made to resolve the deadlock between the farmers and the government. The farmers’ movement, which gained momentum after the 2020-21 protests against farm laws, continues to demand better policies for agricultural workers.
As the protest unfolds, political analysts believe the farmers’ agitation could influence upcoming elections, especially in states where agriculture plays a crucial role in the economy. The central government has yet to issue a formal statement on the release of the farmers, but pressure continues to mount for further dialogue and resolution of their demands.
