BJP also demands Punjab polls to be postponed on account of Ravidas Jayanti
Chandigarh, Jan 16: BJP Election Committee is meeting Capt. Arinder Singh, Dhindsa and top Punjab party leaders today in New Delhi, to finalize the names of candidates for February 14 election in the State.
Meanwhile Punjab BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma on Sunday said that the Election Commission has been requested by the BJP that the polling on February 14 should be postponed as on this day lakh of voters travel to Varanasi to pay their respects to Guru Ravidas.
“We have solicited the Election Commission through a letter that lakhs of voters should not be denied their right to vote on February 14. The polling date should be postponed considering the religious sentiments of followers of Guru Ravidas,” the BJP leader said.
“BJP is a party which takes every segment along with it and is considerate to the religious sentiments and at the same time wants that democracy should be upheld and every citizen of the state be able to caste his or her vote,” Dr Sharma said.
BJP leader said many people will go to Varanasi on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti which will be celebrated on Feb 16. The state will go to polls on Feb 14.
On Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had also raised the same demand.
